    The Protectors

"The Protectors" monument located in front of the Michael E. Kobza Hall of Justice Building in Muskegon reminds citizens of Muskegon County of the eight law enforcement officers that have made the supreme sacrifice in their county.  The statue  represents each of the fallen officers in one fashion or another.   The tie tack represents two Muskegon County residents who died while working for the Michigan State Police.  On the officers uniform is the eagle of the City of Roosevelt Park representing one of their fallen officers.

The officers badge is that of the Muskegon County sheriff's Department representing two of their members.  The hat badge design on the statue is that of the City of Muskegon Heights Police Department who lost an officer while performing his duty.  Also on the statue representing a local resident and officer in the Grand Haven Public Safety Department  is the Distinguished Service Cross and Ribbon.  In addition the statue shoulder patches are the design of the Muskegon County Fraternal Order of Police and the officer also carries a Michigan Concerns of Police Survivors (MI COPS) ribbon in his right pocket which represent all the officers of Michigan that have died in the line of duty.

The bronze statue stands 7 feet 6inches high.  The background of the statue is a Limestone wall measuring 20 feet by 12 feet tall.  Two black marble plaques, each 36 inches by 64 inches, bear the names of the fallen officers on one and a poem written Los Angeles Police sergeant George Hahn on the other.

The memorial was dedicated in November of 1999 with a large contingent of survivors, law enforcement officers, friends and local politicians.  The dedication was the culmination of efforts to build the monument at a cost of $80,000.
